Explore Local

We have not spent much time in this region before and just didn’t realise how much there is to do and see… and sooo close to Sydney. We had a great time taking the whole extended family to the Rail Museum, to cuddle the animals at the Sanctuary, we went on a beautiful bushwalk and spent plenty of time exploring all of the cool little towns. We loved our stay, will be back!!

Out and About

Kalinya Estate is located at the gateway to the Southern Highlands, so it is perfectly placed in the middle of two stunning regions.

Whether you are interested in wineries and distilleries, bushwalks and dams, markets and local produce or homewares and antiques; with options to the North and South, you’re assured of plenty to see and do.

Check out both Visit Wollondilly and Visit Southern Highlands for the most up-to-date trip ideas and information about what’s on locally, to help plan the perfect stay!

Eco Sanctuaries

Bargo is proud to host the first ever eco-hub in Australia; with The Australian Wildlife Sanctuary, Bargo Dingo Sanctuary and Feathered Friends Bird Sanctuary.

When you visit Kalinya, you can book into these Sanctuaries for entirely unique and immersive wildlife experiences.

At the Australian Wildlife Sanctuary, you will have a dedicated ranger to help you get up close and experience our native wildlife; including gliders, possums, pythons, kangaroos, crocodiles, lizards… and even the beautiful potoroos and quokkas.

Located next door, the Bargo Dingo Sanctuary will introduce you to the true Australian Dog, where volunteers are dedicated to breeding and teaching about the beautiful native dingo.

We have also recently welcomed Feathered Friends, who are dedicated to the education and preservation of bird species; ranging from the smallest of parrots to the largest birds of prey. In addition, when you stay at Kalinya, you can book exclusive bird experiences onsite at the Estate.

Museums to Explore

Located in the neighbouring town to Kalinya, the N.S.W. Rail Museum is home to the largest rolling stock collection in Australia; with over 100 trains. Book a steam train ride during your visit, or simply climb aboard and explore these incredible machines from all different eras.

Keep a close eye out for special events put on by the museum; the ‘Festival of Steam’ and ‘A Day out with Thomas’ are both renowned nationally for entertaining family members of all ages.

If cricket is more your thing, head South to the Bradman Museum; named after the famous ‘Boy from Bowral’, Sir Donald Bradman. Check out the history and interactive exhibitions with a guided tour, or venture out onto Bradman Oval for a hit on hallowed-cricket-ground!

Farm to Table

Our local towns are home to amazing farms and producers, where if you get your timing right, you can even pick your own. To find out what is in season and book a farm experience, get in touch with our favourites: Berrylicious Strawberries, Cedar Creek Orchard or Bowral Beekeeping.

If you’re looking for seasonal arrangements and styling, you can find the most beautiful flowers as they are being picked at the farm. Call ahead to check what is possible at Jonima Flowers or Thornton Bros.

For the freshest produce and products – to create the most simple of samplers to the most fancy of feasts – check out the local villages produce markets or head to our very favourite local providores at Pheasants Nest Produce.

Don’t Mind if I Do…

If you’re looking to pair amazing food with thoughtfully crafted beer, wine and spirits, look no further than our local regions for the best in beverage offerings.

If you are a craft beer person, Eden Brewery freshly brews onsite with the highest quality ingredients. If you are lucky with timing, you might even be able to sneak in one of their specialty boozy burgers!

Wine tasting has always been a specialty of the Southern Highlands; particularly now that a number of wineries are joining together to promote sustainable farming and wine making practices. If you have time you should check out:  Artemis Wines, Tractorless Vineyard, and Centennial Wines.

Many of our local distilleries are bringing home awards for their specialty flavours. If you are a connoisseur, you will want to try the creations from Joadja Distillery or SoHi Spirits.

Dam it!

Our region is famous for its 5 dams; Avon, Cataract, Nepean, Cordeaux and Warragamba. Warragamba Dam is the largest water supply dam in the world; where you can visit the education centre and walk to the viewing platforms that show off Lake Burragorang and its surrounds.

There is no better way to spend your day than bushwalking in the Southern Highlands and Wollondilly. Check out their websites for the best walks and places to visit, like the beautiful Burragorang Lookout and Mt Gibraltar.
